"Noli Me Tangere (c.1508, oil on canvas) was
inspired by the Biblical account of Christ's post-resurrection time on earth.
The subject was not popular at the time and it is thought that Fra Bartolommeo
had given Titian the idea(20). X-rays show that
Titian developed his design on the canvas, in which the figures form a continuous
movement(21). Titian used chiaroscuro on the figures, as well as the background
landscape. Note that the background for this work is almost the same as in Giorgione's
"Venus" (1510, oil on canvas). It is thought that Titian
finished the background of "Venus" after Giorgione's death.
