Rembrandt

"The Holy Family" (1640, oil on wood) is located in the Musee de Louvre in Paris. This work by Rembrandt is another of his religious paintings. Note how the light from the window on the left is used to highlight the back of Joseph as he works. To the left, Mary and the baby Jesus are joined by another woman. The light source on Mary and the child comes from the same window, while the back of the room is in deep shadow. The room in which these figures are placed seems to be a contemporary Netherlandish building. The emotions conveyed in this work are intimate and tender.
