Notice that even the cartoon of the "Virgin and
St. Anne..." painting shows chiaroscuro. Leonardo uses "carefully placed highlights"
to create a "circular movement"(19). This integrates
the figures while keeping the individual importance of each figure. Note also
the change in composition from this cartoon to the preceding painting.
