Leonardo da Vinci used a special form of chiaroscuro in his art called sfumato. Sfumato literally means "too long in front of the candle." Leonardo "unified his compositions by covering them with a thin, lightly tinted varnish, which resulted in a smoky overall haze..."(18). This can be seen in his work entitled "Virgin and St. Anne with the Christ Child."
