Biblical themes were a favorite of Caravaggio's. "Deposition" (1604) is a prime example of Baroque classicism, with large-scale figures in the foreground and strong chiaroscuro. The body of Christ is the focal point of this work, and has the lightest values. The light seems to come from the front of the picture space, with some of the figures in almost complete shadow. The figures in this work point, either with their gestures or their poses, back to the focal point of Christ.
