Ancient Chinese Art
Ruyi Scepter, decorated with Lingzhi, Jade, Length 35.6 cm. Qing dynasty, 19th century. Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
Wishes are so important that there is a symbol which means, May your wish come true. This is the ruyi scepter, a ceremonial emblem of authority. Scepters like this were often given as presents on special occasions, and the symbols depicted on them show the kind of celebration in which it was presented. The shape of this ruyi is a magic fungus, or lingzhi, which was believed to bring long life and perhaps immortality. Other symbols on ruyi scepters bring hope for wealth or happiness.
