Ancient Chinese Art
With the collapse of the Han dynasty, symbols used as omens of good or bad fortune were used as talismans for protection. Also during this time of strife and invasion, the Buddhist religion became more firmly entrenched in the culture. Artists created many symbols to ensure that one would get ones wish. The wishes for happiness, wealth, and long life are presided over by the Three Star Gods, which are shown on this vase. Fuxing is the God of Blessings and Happiness, and the blessing of sons, so he is usually shown with children (top). Luxing, God of Wealth and Rank, carries his jade badge of office (left). Shouxing, God of Longevity, can be recognized by his high bald head, his staff and scroll, and the peach of immortality, which has magically grown in this depiction.
